Senior Associate Solicitor
charlottelanning@edwardsfamilylaw.co.uk

Charlotte joined Edwards Family Law in November 2020 as an Associate Solicitor and was promoted to Senior Associate in October 2024.

Charlotte undertook her training contract at a leading City firm (under the supervision of Kelly Edwards) where she gained experience in all areas of family law as well as criminal litigation, civil litigation and conveyancing. Charlotte qualified in September 2019 and her practice has been solely focused on family law since.

Charlotte is committed to her clients and will always do all that she can to assist them to reach a resolution in the most amicable and cost-effective manner. Charlotte will always try to resolve matters out of the court arena where possible and is a huge advocate of private FDRs.

Charlotte has been praised by clients for her patience and understanding in difficult circumstances. Charlotte has represented a vast array of individuals and their spouses including professional sports people, business owners, senior medical professionals, property developers and bankers. Charlotte has also acted for third parties, such as the siblings and parents of parties to divorce where there are disputes about the ownership of assets amongst the wider family.

Charlotte has a vast array of experience in all of the issues that can arise from relationship breakdown and focuses largely on complex financial matters, with a particular interest in variation of maintenance cases. Charlotte has acted in a number of cases where undeveloped property is a significant asset or issue. Charlotte frequently drafts pre and post nuptial agreements for clients looking to protect their pre-acquired wealth or inheritance. Charlotte also undertakes complex children work, often involving allegations of sexual offences and domestic abuse.

Charlotte graduated from Pembroke College, Oxford with a 2.1 in Jurisprudence. Charlotte is a member of Resolution and Women in Family Law and is a frequent contributor to the case summaries section of the Financial Remedy Journal.

Charlotte was named an Associate to Watch by Chambers Children / Family in both their 2024 and 2025 guides and is recognised as a Key Lawyer by the Legal 500

Particular highlights include:

  • Representing a wife where the total assets exceeded £105 million, the extent to which a large proportion of these assets were non-matrimonial was a significant issue. The parties were able to reach an agreement without the need for court proceedings to be issued;
  • Representing a mother in highly contested, long running children proceedings in the High Court. The mother had been subject to onerous undertakings for a number of years and by the conclusion of the proceedings, these were all discharged enabling her and the children to lead a less restricted life.
  • Representing a wife following the breakdown of both parties second marriage where the assets exceeded £10m and involved various complexities such as overseas properties, trusts, pensions and land that was in the process of being developed and therefore held significant hope value. There were significant arguments about non-matrimonial property. The case settled on the morning of trial with the wife receiving a generous needs-based settlement.
  • Representing an ex-husband in a variation of maintenance dispute some 10 years after the original proceedings commenced, helping the parties to reach a clean break and bring an end to long running and stressful litigation;
  • Representing a husband with an annual income of £500,000 gross and assisting with settlement negotiations shortly before a final hearing. The parties’ eventual agreement was a substantial move away from the wife’s open position with respect to maintenance, in both quantum and term.

Charlotte is extremely impressive and I felt thoroughly supported and safe in her hands.
